John Provenzano was born in South Boston, Massachusetts (MA), USA. He received a scholarship to study painting at Boston University’s School for the Arts. While attending Boston University, Provenzano was commissioned by Orion Pictures to paint a series of paintings for the Hollywood production, “Mermaids”. Actor, Bob Hoskins, owns one of the paintings from the series, while the remaining are in the artist’s collection.

In 1990, Provenzano graduated with a Masters degree in Painting and received the Esther B. and Albert S. Kahn Career Entry Award. Provenzano has worked and studied with internationally recognized sculptor, John Wilson, who is most known for his Martin Luther King Jr. sculpture on display in the rotunda of the US Capitol. Provenzano has also studied with artists, Joseph Ablow, David Aronson, Reed Kay, and Arthur Polonski.

Jazz and the urban landscape has been a theme throughout Provenzano’s work. Sculptor, Gregory Steinsieck describes Provenzano’s art: “The energy of the work is clear and confident. Layers of bold strokes are visually woven into highly active and powerful paintings. This work is rooted in the virtues of improvisation and the viewer is invited to participate.”

Provenzano’s paintings are in numerous collections and can be seen in galleries on the East Coast of the USA. His work appeared on Channel 7 and Fox 25 News when Manny Ramirez of the Boston Red Sox was featured. Interior designers, including noted designer, Dennis Duffy, have either used Provenzano’s paintings or commissioned work for their clients. In 2005, he was included in the “Director’s Pick” exhibition at the Judi Rotenberg Gallery in Boston. Most recently, he exhibited at the Metropolitan Pavilion in New York and will be included in an upcoming show in Egypt. Provenzano lives in Dorchester and works out of his studio in South Boston.
